Cholera threats in Hatfield and Hatcliffe
Tuesday, 13 November 2007

Image The Combined Harare Residents` Association (CHRA) warns of an unmitigated health disaster in Harare unless the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA) and the Ministry of Health urgently attends to the crisis.

The City of Harare is sitting on a health time bomb unless something is done about the water crisis that has hit the City. There are threats of Cholera all over the City as water shortages force residents to get water from nearby streams. In Mabvuku and Tafara the crisis has left thousands suffering from Cholera and Dysentery.

Hatcliffe residents have gone for three month with water supply. A visit to Hatcliffe showed that most residents now purchase water from nearby schools. There are reports of isolated case of Cholera. CHRA fears that an outbreak is imminent in this area. Hatfiled and Masasa Park have complained that they only get water once in two weeks. When the water does come it is muddy and has some alge like deposits. A visit to local clinics indicates a possibility of an outbreak as the water situation deteriorates.

The Association has written to the Minister of Water and Infrastructure development and the Minister of Health and Child Welfare to urgently attend to the crisis. The World Health Organisation is also encouraged to urgently intervene as Zimbabwe is sitting on a health crisis.
